Every dog is different—but one thing they all have in common? They feel (and smell!) better after a good groom. Still, many pet parents ask us: “How often should my dog come in?” Let’s break it down.
It Depends on the Coat
Here’s a general guide based on coat type:
- Short-haired dogs (Boxers, Beagles, etc.): Every 6–8 weeks for a bath, nail trim, ear cleaning, and de-shedding.
- Medium coats (Golden Retrievers, Spaniels): Every 4–6 weeks, especially during shedding seasons.
- Long or curly coats (Poodles, Doodles, Shih Tzus): Every 4–6 weeks for a full groom to prevent mats and tangles.
- Hairless or low-shed breeds: Every 3–6 weeks for skin care, nail trims, and coat maintenance.
Other Factors to Consider
- Lifestyle: Dogs who swim, roll in dirt, or have allergies may need more frequent visits.
- Seasonal Shedding: Spring and fall are prime time for blowouts—brush-outs and de-shedding help manage the fluff.
- Age & Health: Senior pups or dogs with skin issues may need special care more often.
Don’t Wait for the Mess
Regular grooming keeps your dog’s skin healthy, prevents matting, and lets us catch potential health concerns early—like lumps, bumps, or ear infections.
Pro tip: If you can’t run a comb through your pup’s coat without resistance, it’s time for a visit.
